The first Gosloto 7/49 draw was held on September 10th, 2005, only two years after Russia passed a law to create a national lottery. The lottery is operated by Orglot Ltd. in cooperation with the national government. When Gosloto 7/49 proved to be popular, Russian lottery officials from Orglot Ltd. and the Russian government decided to produce a variation on the national favourite lottery. In October 2008, the Goslotto 6/45 lottery was launched, offering players a different lottery structure, including a more limited, 45-number guess range and a six-number winning combination.
Gosloto 7/49 was created with hopes of producing funding for the national initiative “Sport and Physical Culture Development in the Russian Federation for 2006-2015”. Within this framework, 15% of all lottery funding is allocated to public works projects, including the developing of sports and recreational facilities and community program development across Russia. In its first three years, Gosloto 7/49 generated enough profits to support the building or upkeep of 225 public facilities, including swimming pools and athletic arenas.
